Know Your Rights Class

DCLY is sponsoring a "Know Your Rights" course for youth in the DC community. The interactive course is designed to raise youth awareness of the following three areas of law:

  • First Amendment: Free Speech and Criminalization of Speech;
  • In re Gault: Due Process Rights for Juveniles in a Court Setting; and
  • Fourth Amendment: Search & Seizure in the School Context.

In collaboration with various community organizations, the course will be taught by volunteer DCLY lawyers and teachers to youth who are already involved with local organizations. DCLY designed the course to be flexible, in order to work with the particular schedules and circumstances of local organizations. Typically, the two-hour course will be taught on a weekly basis for a month.

What You Can Do To Help:

  • Lawyers – volunteer your time! Commit to teaching a full “run-through” of the course to one group of youth in the community. Your time commitment will include prep time (i.e., reading through pre-prepared course materials), and teaching a 1.5-hour weekly class for a month. DCLY will provide any support you need.
  • Community Organizations – invite us to teach the course to your group! We welcome the opportunity to spend a month with your youth, creating a dialogue on and raising awareness of these important legal issues. Please call us – we will work with your schedule and needs to provide this service.
